INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION

HOME 2124

RESULTS!

Foreword

Welcome to the future of architecture and design! We are excited to present the results of Archiol's fourth edition of our innovative competition, Home of the Next Century: Home2124. This competition has been a remarkable journey, inviting architects, designers, and creative thinkers to envision what homes will look like a century from now.

As the world evolves, so do our lifestyles, environments, and technologies. The Home2124 competition was not just a design challenge but a platform for visionaries to confront the pressing issues of the 22nd century—climate change, rapid urbanization, and advancements in technology. Our participants were tasked with reimagining the very essence of what a home could and should be in a future where sustainability, adaptability, and comfort are paramount.

Today, we are proud to unveil the winning designs that have successfully pushed the boundaries of architectural thought. These entries are more than just blueprints; they are forward-thinking solutions that blend creativity, functionality, and environmental consciousness, offering a glimpse into what the future of residential living could hold.

Each design represents a unique perspective on the home of tomorrow, offering insight into how we can adapt to a changing world while preserving the essence of human comfort and connection. We are incredibly inspired by the level of innovation and dedication demonstrated by all our participants.

Thank you for joining us on this exciting journey into the future of architecture. We hope these designs spark your imagination and inspire you to think about how homes will evolve in the next century.

Welcome to the Home2124. The future starts now!

JURY COMMENTS

“The project successfully moves beyond the conventional box-like design of modern living spaces by incorporating interactive open spaces for public use. This approach is particularly effective at the street level, enhancing the availability of public areas in urban environments, in contrast to the enclosed layouts typical of contemporary cities. Additionally, the project integrates some passive design strategies, which is commendable. However, these strategies appear to be somewhat disjointed and not fully coordinated to form a cohesive, impactful solution. Moreover, the issue of privacy for residents seems to be overlooked, despite being a crucial aspect of living spaces.”

JURY COMMENTS

“The concept is innovative in respecting the environment through its shape, prioritizing nature and integrating it with the dwellings. This harmonious design could have a positive mental impact on the inhabitants by fostering a connection with the natural surroundings. Additionally, the form is easily expandable, making construction and assembly more efficient. However, the tube-like shape introduces a repetitive aesthetic that might limit its visual appeal. Furthermore, the isolation of users within these structures could reduce social interaction, detracting from a sense of community and connection among residents.

Moreover, the proposed sustainable or environmental solutions need deeper investigation, as they currently seem vague, impractical, and potentially ineffective. For these strategies to be truly beneficial, they must be well-defined, region-specific, and grounded in practical application. Without this, the environmental aspects of the design may not yield the desired benefits. “

“The innovative interaction between the built environment and nature is fascinating in its capacity to preserve natural landscapes while forging connections between humans and their natural surroundings. The implementation of sustainable strategies adds to the appeal. However, the design is hampered by the unit's isolation, due to the lack of access to transportation options. Furthermore, its ability to accommodate larger populations could lead to a significant environmental footprint, which is a concern that needs addressing.”

“The innovative concept of a symbiotic relationship is compelling, with sustainability strategies like hydroponic farming, water filtration, and self-sufficient capsules offering intriguing solutions. However, the choice of water as a setting introduces environmental challenges for the surrounding water bodies, potentially disrupting marine ecosystems. Additionally, the isolated nature of the units could negatively impact the social lives of residents, and the design poses significant risks in extreme weather conditions or if the system fails to function properly.”

JURY COMMENTS

“The concept of modular units, each with its own specific function, is intriguing, especially as they can be combined or used individually. The versatility of the modules to adapt to different climates, along with the integration of technology and sustainable strategies, is a strong point. However, the concept overly relies on technology, which remains vague in terms of practical applicability. Additionally, the segregated nature of the units discourages social cohesion. Moreover, algae-based systems require specific climates to thrive, making them unsuitable for all regions.”

“The inspiration drawn from nature to create a unit compatible with its environment in a drought-dominated region is intriguing, and the shell concept holds potential for further development. However, the idea remains vague, and the overall project description lacks clarity. Additionally, the building layout inside the unit appears to disregard human scale, raising concerns about practicality. The concept, while creative, seems naive and requires significantly more thought and refinement to become a viable solution.”

JURY COMMENTS

“The concept of creating a portable unit with a creative form is innovative, but it requires deeper consideration across multiple aspects. Establishing living units in areas that are already environmentally fragile, such as those impacted by climate change, needs more thorough research and analysis to avoid exacerbating existing issues. For instance, ice storage in these regions is already compromised due to climate change, and further intervention could worsen the situation. Additionally, I would need more information on how the interior layout would remain stable and functional while the unit remains portable. Regarding the sustainable strategies, they should be more tailored to the specific region. For example, how much sunlight is available in the area, and is it efficient to rely on solar energy? Furthermore, the design of these units seems to foster a sense of isolation, which might not align with creating a socially cohesive living environment.”

JURY COMMENTS

“The design presents an intriguing array of futuristic technologies, envisioning a future where solutions like environmental preservation and self-healing technologies address potential challenges. However, the feasibility and practicality of implementing these strategies are uncertain. Furthermore, the design feels isolated, lacking a visionary approach to fostering social interaction and community engagement, both of which are crucial for creating sustainable living environments.”
